Cancer comes in many forms…Breast cancer, prostate cancer, brain cancer…the list is long. It is a group of related diseases that begin in the cells. Our cells grow and divide to produce more cells as needed to keep us healthy. Sometimes that process goes off-track and new cells form when our bodies don’t need them and old cells don’t die when they should. It’s those extra cells that form a mass of tissue- what we call a tumor. Not all tumors are cancerous. When they are, they are called malignant tumors. Cells in malignant tumors invade and destroy the tissue around them- they can even enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system. There are many different types of cancer and most cancers are named for where they begin. For example, in the throat, the breast. Symptoms and treatment depend on the type of cancer and how advanced it is. Treatment plans may include surgery, hormone therapy, biological therapy, radiation and/or chemotherapy.
