Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine, which is part of your digestive system. Most cases of colon cancer begin as a small clump of cells called polyps. Polyps usually start as non-cancerous cells, but may gradually develop into colon cancer. Your doctor may suspect colon cancer if you have changes in bowel habits, blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, fatigue or vomiting. The vast majority of people diagnosed with colon cancer are older than 50. Other risk factors for colon cancer include a family history of the illness, a prior history of colon cancer or polyps, and certain hereditary conditions. Daily aspirin use may protect against colon cancer and it is recommended that all adults be screened starting at age 50…earlier if you have risk factors. Several tests are used to find and diagnose colon cancer, such as colonoscopy and blood content in stools. Learn more about colon cancer or share your story or experience with icyou.
