Depression refers to any downturn in mood, which may be relatively transitory and perhaps due to something trivial. This is differentiated from Clinical depression which is marked by symptoms that last two weeks or more and are so severe that they interfere with daily living. In the field of psychiatry the word depression can also have this meaning but more specifically refers to a mental illness when it has reached a severity and duration to warrant a diagnosis.

Depression is a common but serious medical illness that involves the brain. It’s more than just feeling sad for a few days. Depression involves persistent feelings that can get in the way of your everyday life. A doctor or mental health professional can determine whether you have depression by conducting an evaluation that may involve diagnostic tests and a physical examination to rule out a medical condition. Symptoms of depression include persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings, feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, guilt, worthlessness and or helplessness, irritability, restlessness, loss of interest in activities or hobbies, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, difficulty remembering details and making decisions, insomnia or sleeping too much, overeating or loss of appetite, thoughts of suicide and persistent aches or pains, headaches or digestive problems. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depression is likely the result of a combination of genetic, biochemical, environmental and psychological factors. The good news: depression is a highly treatable disorder. People with depression may benefit from a range of treatments including but not limited to: psychological therapies, medication, or electroconvulsive therapy. As always, consult your doctor before starting a treatment regimen. Watch more video about depression or share your story or experience on video with icyou.
