You might be tempted to use the two terms interchangeably, but being obese is not the same as being overweight. Obesity means having a high amount of extra body fat. Overweight means having extra body weight from either muscle, bone, fat and/or body water. A common tool for measuring obesity is the body mass index or BMI. A BMI uses weight and height to correlate with body fat, though it doesn’t directly measure body fat. Overweight and obese people are at an increased risk for many diseases and health conditions including: Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, and some cancers. Researchers have found genetics as well as behaviors can contribute to the likelihood of someone becoming overweight or obese. The good news, obesity can be reversed! As always, you should consult your physician before starting a fitness regimen. Watch more video about obesity or share your story on video with icyou.
